Forming

fc1Hot Rolled Sheet is used for a wide range of applications, from simple bends to complex draws or structural applications that require a specific strength level. In order to meet all the customer requirements for this variety of applications, proper selection of the steel grade and production processing practices are imperative. Customer selection of a particular sheet steel to match the requirements of an application can be a complex task.  This selection involves analyzing the mechanical properties, type of forming required (bending, stretching, drawing, hole expansion), type of joining and surface characteristics. A sheet steel that forms well in one type of operation may not form well in another. Many forming operations involve a combination of several types of deformation. In press operations, the surface interaction with the tooling and lubrication is critical and must be considered.

For all these reasons, no one single test can be used to predict formability.  For assistance in selecting the steel quality for your application, contact your local U. S. Steel Sales Office for customer technical service.

Joining

Welding
fc2
Hot Rolled Sheet is readily weldable using either arc or electrical resistance methods.  A welding procedure must be utilized that is compatible with the chemical composition of the sheet and the in-service requirements of the final product.

In arc welding, proper joint design, piece fit-up and electrode selection are critical factors in obtaining optimum welds.  For resistance welding, specific studies may be required to determine the proper welding parameters needed for acceptable welds.  The ability to obtain acceptable weld integrity will be affected by the steel composition, cleanliness, thickness, welding current and cycle time.

fc3Painting

Hot rolled products are available in a surface suitable for satisfactory paint adhesion.  As in all painting applications, suitable surface preparation and pre-paint treatments must be selected for the specific application.
