Environmental Stewardship

Basic Principle: Continued reduction of emissions
As a carbon-intense industry, the steel industry and
U. S. Steel are seriously concerned about the amount of greenhouse gasses produced in the steelmaking process. Even though the steel industry produces less than 3 percent of the world’s CO2, it is the position of U. S. Steel and the World Steel Association that this amount can be decreased.

One method of reducing greenhouse gas emissions is to reduce the amount of energy used in steelmaking because energy use and greenhouse gas emissions are so closely linked. And it is working. Since 1990, the steel industry has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by more than 33 percent, well beyond the Kyoto Protocol goals for that time frame.

U. S. Steel has been part of that industry reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and energy management. Through our Corporate Energy and CO2 Management Process Steering Committee and Corporate Energy and CO2 Management Team, a company-wide effort at the executive, management and operations levels has been put in place to investigate, share and create best practice solutions throughout the company to manage and reduce energy intensity and CO2 production.

U. S. Steel is also committed to investing in technology to move the steelmaking process in an even more environmentally responsible direction. In our Serbian operations, we have committed to investing significant capital into environmental projects in our steelmaking operations. In the United States, the best available control technology is being utilized at the new coke batteries being built at our Clairton Plant and at our Granite City Works to reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing our world-class steel products.
